Glasgow Stitches Its Name Into the Rushnyk

A church in Scotland, filled end to end. Grandparents, parents, teenagers, small children sitting cross-legged at the front. Vyshyvanky everywhere — white on white, black on red, blue on cream. Clergy at the centre. Sunflowers on the table to one side, a korovai resting on a blue-and-yellow cloth to the other. And held out across the whole front row, an embroidered panel carrying a single word: ГЛАЗГО. Glasgow.

The cloth in their hands is the Rushnyk Yednosti – Rushnyk Peremohy — the Rushnyk of Unity, Rushnyk of Victory. In May 2026, The Book of World Records certified it in Tallinn as a European Record: 160 metres 50 centimetres of embroidery, 103 individual rushnyky, 89 organizations, more than 120 embroiderers across 13 countries. It is the largest collaborative embroidered cultural project of its kind in Europe.

What makes it unusual is that the record did not finish it. The rushnyk spent 2026 touring — Portugal, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Cyprus, Austria, the Netherlands, Norway, Scotland — and at stop after stop the local Ukrainian community brought out a needle rather than just a camera. Ireland added three panels on a windswept coastal gathering. Scotland has now written itself in too.

This is why the project describes the cloth as unfinished by design. A museum piece is complete and protected. This one gets carried into a parish hall, unrolled along a church floor, held up by a hundred pairs of hands, and sent on with one more name on it than it had the week before.

On Sunday, September 13, 2026, the rushnyk crosses the Atlantic for the first time in its history. UAFest at Riverside Park becomes its North American Premiere — the first stop outside Europe, and the start of a journey onward across Canada. Lanark County will do exactly what Glasgow just did: bring its own panel, and have it sewn onto the cloth on the main stage.
